Some instances of a chipped tooth are minimal and may not even require a trip to the dentist. However, cases when the damage is too severe often need urgent treatment. Here are some possible reasons:

• Increased tooth sensitivity. When a tooth is cracked, sensitive layers like dentine may be exposed. This can cause sensitivity, which can be uncomfortable. You might feel it when you’re eating or drinking hot and cold foods and drinks.
• Sharp edges. A chip in your tooth can have sharp edges that can cut your tongue and soft tissues in your mouth. It can be quite painful and may cause them to bleed.
• Risk of tooth decay. Decay or dental caries can quickly accumulate in a chipped tooth due to rough surfaces or edges. If left unchecked, it can progress and lead to a cavity or hole in your tooth. Such a problem may result in irreversible damage.
• Risk of infection. If the breakage is severe enough to uncover the dental pulp or the part of your tooth that supplies blood, bacteria can easily penetrate inside and irritate it. It can allow bacteria to grow and cause infection with time. It can increase the possibility of pulp tissue dies.

Along with pain, you may also experience other oral symptoms of infection:

• Increased sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures

Dental abscess may also cause generalised symptoms:

• Fever, chills, or sweating
• Swollen neck glands.
• Feeling sick or uneasy.

The following signs may indicate that the infection has spread deeper into the jaws or other regions of the body:

• General discomfort.
  If the infection spreads to your body, it can cause flu-like symptoms, and you may begin to feel sick or unwell.
• Swelling. When the infection spreads, it causes inflammation and can lead to swelling in the gums, cheeks, and jaw. This can make swallowing, breathing, and opening your mouth difficult.
• Fever. When you develop a fever due to a tooth infection, your body’s defence kicks in. Your body recognises the infection and raises its temperature in an attempt to kill the bacteria. While this is an important part of your body’s response to infection, it can also be dangerous if the fever is too high or lasts too long.
• Dehydration. If you experience darker urine, fewer trips to the bathroom, or confusion, it’s important to increase your fluid intake. Your body needs extra fluids to maintain balanced levels and fight off the infection.
• Increased heart rate and breathing. Infectious bacteria travel through the bloodstream and reach the heart, where they can multiply and produce toxins. This can cause a fast heart rate accompanied by an increased breathing rate.
